Vuma celebrates 1 million subscriber milestone

Vuma, South Africa’s leading fibre network operator (FNO) and a MAZIV-owned high-speed fibre-to-the-home provider, has officially surpassed the one million subscriber milestone.

What started as a grassroots project in the streets of Parkhurst has surged into a nationwide digital revolution. To date, Vuma stands as a titan of transformation, having successfully bridged the digital divide and turned a bold vision into a reality for a million households. This achievement is not just a number; it’s a resounding declaration that world-class fibre internet is no longer a luxury, it is a fundamental right for every South African. It’s also a powerful testament to Vuma’s commitment to digital inclusion.

“Reaching one million subscribers is a major milestone for Vuma and a strong validation of our long-term strategy,” says Dietlof Mare, Chief Executive Officer at MAZIV. “It reflects the growing importance of fibre as essential infrastructure and the success of our close collaboration with our internet service provider (ISP) partners, who play a critical role in connecting and supporting customers on our network. Most importantly, it speaks directly to our purpose of helping reduce the digital divide and building a more connected South Africa.”

More than just a number

Hitting one million subscribers is not just a corporate milestone, it's a major win for digital equity. It means one million households can work, learn, and connect without limits. This achievement strengthens the work-from-home model, supports local SMEs, and gives students access to global knowledge, helping to narrow the digital divide between suburbs and townships. In just eight years, Vuma reached one million subscribers, outpacing ADSL, which took 14 years to reach the same mark. This underscores how essential fibre internet has become to daily life and meaningful economic participation.

This milestone belongs to the people of South Africa. Growth across Vuma’s footprint, particularly in the Reach communities, shows that when affordable, high-quality access is available, people make full use of it. Beyond building a fibre network, Vuma is laying the foundation for a truly inclusive digital economy.

From its humble beginnings in Parkhurst to a nationwide footprint serving one million connected households, Vuma remains focused on empowering communities, enabling opportunity, and unlocking the full potential of a connected South Africa.
